The powder can travel from sanitary napkins, diaphragms, and condoms through the vagina, uterus, and fallopian tubes to the ovaries, according to the American Cancer Society. Once the talcum powder enters the reproductive tract women may have an increased risk of ovarian cancer.

1971: The first study researching the link between talc and ovarian cancer.

1982: Study published in the journal, Cancer in August of 1982 showed women who used sanitary napkins with talcum powder were three times more likely to develop ovarian cancer as those who did not.
2013: In June 2013 the journal, Cancer prevent Research publish a study showed that talcum powder use in the genital area had a 20-30 percent increased risk of developing epithelial ovarian cancer than those who did not.

Lawsuits

2013: A South Dakota federal judge supported a jury’s finding against Johnson & Johnson on a negligence claim in a woman’s lawsuit linking her cancer to the company’s talcum powder. The jury ultimately found J&J liable for failure to warn but did not grant any monetary damages to the plaintiff.
2016: Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay $72 million to the family of a woman who died of ovarian cancer allegedly linked to decades of using the company’s talcum-based baby powders. The suit argued that J&J knowingly failed to warn consumers of a supposed cancer risk posed by using its Baby Powder and Shower to Shower products.
