Reckless Driving

Reckless driving is a  form of aggressive driving; the other driver takes risks behind that wheel that can lead to a serious or deadly car crash. A range of driving behaviors qualify as reckless driving, all of which create a dangerous environment for others.

Speeding, weaving in and out of lanes, driving on the highway shoulder to pass, or passing on the wrong side or without sufficient space to do so safely are all reckless and negligent actions.

Teen drivers are at higher risk of vehicle accidents, and speeding and other reckless driving behavior is a contributing factor in the high numbers of death of teen drivers and passengers, making it the leading cause of death for 13 to 19-year-olds.

The Insurance Institute reports that two-thirds of young drivers who died as a result of injuries were male. These drivers are far more likely to take risks, and in doing so, cause deadly accidents in which innocent people are seriously or catastrophically injured, or die as a result of their injuries.

Wisconsin state law 346.62 makes reckless driving illegal. That law says motorists may not endanger the safety of any person or property by the negligent operation of a vehicle. The law further states that no person may cause bodily harm or great bodily harm to another by the negligent operation of a vehicle.

Reckless driving has led to many tragic deaths and injuries, all of which were entirely preventable and the direct result of irresponsible driving behaviors.
